ERF Valves and the Motion Control Systems

Principle of suspension-type ERF valve

Principle of homogenious-type ERF valve

ER fluids change their apparent viscosity according to an applied electric field. ER fluids have two kinds. One is suspension-type ER fluid with particles, and the other one is homogeneous-type (liquid crystal-type) ER fluid.
Using ER valves, it is possible to directly interface between electric signals and fluid power without the need for mechanical moving parts. It is expected that fluid power systems could benefit from such a simple, high performance mechanism. Also it is expected that ER fluids are applied to micro machines.
