Micro valves using Magneto-rheological Fluids (MRF) are proposed and developed. The MRF is a suspension of dielectric fluids with micro-size magnetic particles, which increases the apparent viscosity in an applied static electric field. MRVs are fabricated as a pressure control valve for micro systems. A microvalve using a MR fluid drop as a valve-body (Magnetizable Liquid Valve-body Valve; MLV valve) is proposed, fabricated, and tested. The valve utilizes the pulling force of MR fluid to the applied magnetic field and can shut off the flow irrespective of the machining errors.
